English golfer Mark Young (Longridge Golf Club) won the PREM Group Irish Masters at the stunning Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort in Blessington, Co Wicklow, after a thrilling three-way playoff on Friday.
Finishing on -9 after three rounds, Young found himself alongside Ashley Mansell (Clevedon Golf Club) and Tomasz Anderson (Centurion Golf Club) in a playoff on the par 4 18th. Young held his nerve to par the playoff hole while Anderson and Mansell bogeyed, claiming the first place prize of £10,000.
There was a thrilling finish on the final regulation hole as Anderson, the leader on -11, double-bogeyed to give Niall Kearney (Royal Dublin Golf Club) the opportunity to sneak in and take victory. The Dubliner was on -10 going onto the 18th, but he landed in the bunker to the left of the green and then missed a presentable shot for a bogey to finish the tournament on -8 and miss out on a playoff place.
The course record was broken early on Wednesday when Richard Mansell (Beau Desert Golf Club) carded a -6 round of 66, but that was shattered later in the day when Liam Murray (GNK Golf & The LM Club) took the overnight lead after finishing a stunning round on -7, which featured an eagle on the par 5 15th. Niall Kearney matched that record with a superb round of 65 as he steadily shot eight birdies and one bogey on Wedndesday.
The low scores dried up a little across Thursday and Friday as a sharpening wind came into play, but the top of the leaderboard remained congested as the title remained on the line right to the end.
Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort will host this event on the EuroPro Tour for a further two years, committing to stage the only competition on the tour to be played in Ireland until 2020. The stunning parkland course which overlooks the Blessington Lakes presented plenty of challenges to the players, but conditions were ideal right throughout the three-day event and that led to some great golf.
The staging of this major tournament at Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort is testament to the work that is currently being done at the Wicklow venue, which was also able to provide accommodation for many of the 149 golfers who took part.
Speaking after winning the tournament, Mark Young said; “I am really proud to have won the PREM Group Irish Masters after such a competitive tournament. The scoring was really low out on the course all week and that is due to the phenomenal condition of the grounds at Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort. It is one of the best courses I have played on the EuroPro Tour, and it was great to come to a beautiful part of Ireland for this event.”
Jim Murphy, CEO of PREM Group, said; “Congratulations to Mark on what was a fantastic win. There was some really high class golf played out on the course over the last three days and to emerge victorious from such a competitive field is very impressive. We are delighted to have hosted such a large number of top class golfers at Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort, and I have no doubt that we will see many of them competing at the very highest level of world golf in the coming years.
“We got great feedback from many of the players who were highly complimentary of the course, and, having played it during the Pro Am event on Tuesday, I can only praise the brilliant staff here at Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort for having it in such pristine condition.”
Pat Barrett, Golf Business Development Manager at Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort, said; “I think Tulfarris has really announced itself on the European stage thanks to such a fantastic tournament this week. Many of the golfers were adamant that this course is European Tour standard, and to hear great reviews of the course from guys who have played on courses across Europe is fantastic. The standard of golf was amazing, the weather held up perfectly, and I think we can all reflect on what is a job well done. We’re already looking forward to hosting this tournament at Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort again next year.”
